I began painting seriously at the age of 15 while still living at home with my family in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. After high school, I chose the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut, to begin serious studies in classical drawing and painting styles. I later transferred to the University of Utah in Salt Lake City to complete my formal education and graduated in December 2002 with a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, with an emphasis in Drawing and Painting.
Recently, I have returned to Colorado where I am continuing my career as an artist. I hope to become the kind of artist who will be able to utilize my talent appropriately and skillfully to create interesting, thought provoking works of art. At the present time, while continuing to paint, work on commissions and show my art in various locations, I also teach figure drawing classes at Colorado Mountain College. I enjoy introducing aspiring young and old artists to the joy of creating art. Since I began teaching I have found more clarity in my own work. I believe this comes from the affirmation teaching brings to me.
Now, at age 24, my art has evolved into what I consider a more mature and cohesive body of work. Having said that, I am always changing and developing as an artist, and know my journey will never end. There will never be a final destination; this is what I love most about painting. Because I need to continue to learn and progress, I look forward to the future. Right now I am finding joy in the constant struggles and rewards my work brings me each and every day.
Currently my intent for each piece is to create a well thought out and completed painting which shows signs of new development of my artistic skills. Having an intelligent understanding of why and how I paint my subject matter is critical. My work is never the product of a few objects thrown together in order to create a painting. It is the case of much thought and consideration. As a painting develops, it is always a series of careful selections. It is, in some ways, like a puzzle that has certain and deliberate conclusions if arranged properly. Right now I am attempting to find all the right pieces and put them in the right places. If I succeed, that would mean perfection. And, who is to say what perfection is?
